Dr. Abdul Kalam was undoubtedly one of the most popular Indian Presidents and personalities. He was not just popular but truly loved by people. July 27th is his death anniversary.
Abdul Kalam was an inspiration for many. He came from a poor muslim family in Tamilnadu. Became an engineer, lead several key projects at DRDO and later became a very inspirational President. He united people across the boundaries of religion, language and state pride.
Despite being a very devout muslim he was well versed in Hinduism, played veena and met religious leaders across the entire spectrum. In some sense he became a symbol for India’s multiculturalism.
Indians have always valued education and it is a key middleclass value that hard work, good education gets you out of poverty permanently. Dr. Kalam showed that you can achieve excellence and unbelievable popularity.
